Smart Lipo: What It Is & Common Questions

Posted on: 24 August 2018

For many years, traditional liposuction has been one of the most highly sought-after cosmetic procedures by people looking to get a slimmer waistline, firmer backside, or thinner thighs. However, traditional liposuction is fairly invasive and recovery time can be significant for some people. A new player in the cosmetic procedure world is working to change all that: smart lipo. If you have been considering liposuction, you may want to find out more about smart lipo first. Here is a closer look at smart lipo, what it is, and a few of the common questions and answers you should know.

So, what exactly is smart lipo anyway?

In general terms, smart lipo is a procedure that involves the use of a laser to permanently eliminate fat cells in target areas. There is a tiny tube inserted into the problem area through your skin, a laser fiber is inserted, and then the laser pretty much liquefies the fat. The liquefied fat is then sucked out through the tiny inserted tube, so it comes out a lot easier than what it would with traditional liposuction in which the fat has to be broken up as it is being removed.

Is smart liposuction less painful than traditional lipo?

Smart lipo aims to be as minimally invasive as possible. The surgeon will use a local anesthetic instead of putting you to sleep for the procedure, and most people do claim that the procedure is not as painful as traditional liposuction. During traditional lipo, a long metal tube is maneuvered around to different areas under the skin to break up fat as it is being sucked out through the tube. Because the insertion area is small and the fat is taken out through a small tube in a liquefied state, you should not have as much discomfort as you normally would with regular lipo.

What are the advantages of smart lipo?

Smart lipo offers several advantages to patients beyond just the lack of pain during and after the procedure. Some of the most noteworthy advantages include:

  • The procedure does not take as long to do
  • The procedure can be done in the doctor's office instead of a hospital
  • The procedure has a quick recovery time

Additionally, laser-assisted lipo does not leave the skin in the area sunken like it does with regular liposuction because it naturally retracts during treatment. This reaction produces the desirable shorter recovery period and usually less bruising.
